Mr. Hanley Honors English III 12/8/10 Hester as Luxury to Her Lovers Adrienne Rich, a female poet, perpetuates her idea in When We at rest(predicate) Aeaken: Writing as Re-Vision discussing the position of wo manpower in a society in which workforce dominate in. Richs idea directly gibe with Nathaniel Hawthornes novel, The Scarlet Letter, in which Hester Prynne, a woman who has been convicted of adultery, is sentenced to wear a scarlet letter, a symbolization of her sin. Rich suggests that men view woman as objects or luxuries as protecters, nurse, cook, bearers of his seeds. Similarly, in Hawthornes novel, Hesters beloved support is contained in a love triangle between her husband, Chillingworth, who had wed her for delight, and Dimmesdale who depends on her strength to commemorate his adultery crime a unfathomable. Hesters husband, who goes by the anonym Roger Chillingworth, is seen as a outlander in the beginning of the novel, merely no one knows that he is h er husband. After the trial ends, Chillingworth visits Hester when she is in her cell with her baby, and Chillingworth tells her I move thee into my heart, into its innermost chamber, and sought to sore thee by the warmth which they heraldic bearing made there. (51) This shows that Chillingworth uses Hester in this unification to bring more gladness in his life with the comfort that is expected from Hester, and with that comfort, he intends to kick in it back to Hester to comfort her. He also mentions It seemed not so wild a moon . . . that a simple satisfaction . . ., might yet be mine, (51) which shows his other reason for marrying Hester is to throw away a family. In this marriage, Chillingworths purpose for marrying Hester was to experience happiness and family in his life, which was previously change with work.
